God's Scriptures:
God’s scriptures are the Divine revelations that guide humanity toward a righteous and fulfilling life. These sacred texts are central to understanding the will and wisdom of The God Almighty (الله). Throughout history, God has revealed His guidance to various prophets, delivering messages that address the moral, spiritual, and social needs of their respective communities. This article explores the significance of these scriptures, their common themes, and the respect that Muslims must extend to all Divinely inspired texts.
Introduction to Divine Revelation:
Divine revelation is the process through which God communicates His will and guidance to humanity. This communication is crucial for guiding humans toward a path of righteousness and salvation. Scriptures serve as the medium for these revelations, encapsulating God’s instructions and wisdom. They provide a clear framework for understanding the purpose of life and the principles that should govern human conduct.
“A.L.R. This is a Book which We have revealed to you, so that you may lead people from darkness into light, by the permission of their Lord, to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy.” (Quran 14:1)
“Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong).” (Quran 2:185)
The Major Holy Books:
Among the many revelations, four major holy books are prominently recognized in Islam: the Torah (التَّوْرَاة), Psalms (الزَّبُور), Gospel (الإِنْجِيْل), and the Quran (القُرْآن). The Torah was revealed to Moses (مُوسَى), the Psalms to David (دَاوُود), the Gospel to Jesus (عِيسَى), and the Quran to Muhammad (مُحَمَّد). Each of these scriptures was sent to guide a specific community, addressing their unique challenges and circumstances.
“It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus).” (Quran 3:3)
“And in their footsteps, We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.” (Quran 5:46)
The Quran as the Final Revelation:
The Quran (القُرْآن) holds a special place in Islam as the final and most complete revelation from God. Revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (مُحَمَّد) over 23 years, the Quran provides comprehensive guidance for all aspects of life. It is considered the ultimate source of Divine wisdom, preserved in its original form without any alterations. The Quran addresses both the spiritual and practical dimensions of human existence, offering solutions to contemporary issues while reaffirming the eternal truths found in earlier scriptures.
The قُرْآن says… “We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).” (Quran 15:9)
The قُرْآن says… “To you We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that has come to you.” (Quran 5:48)
Common Themes in God's Scriptures:
Despite being revealed in different times and places, God’s scriptures share common themes that underscore the unity of Divine guidance. Central to all these texts is the concept of Monotheism (التَّوْحِيْد), the belief in the oneness of God. They also emphasize justice, mercy, compassion, and moral integrity. These themes are consistently reinforced across different scriptures, highlighting the universal values that God wants humanity to uphold.
The قُرْآن says… “The same religion has He established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah – the which We have sent by inspiration to thee – and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.” (Quran 42:13)
The قُرْآن says… “Say: ‘Come, I will rehearse what Allah hath (really) prohibited you from’: Join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want – We provide sustenance for you and for them; come not nigh to shameful deeds, whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.” (Quran 6:151)
The Role of Prophets in Revelation:
Prophets (الأَنْبِيَاء) play a pivotal role in the delivery and dissemination of God’s messages. They are chosen by God to receive His revelations and convey them to their communities. Prophets exemplify righteous living and serve as role models, guiding people toward a life of obedience to God. Their teachings and actions help to illuminate the path that believers should follow.
The قُرْآن says… “Not a messenger did We send before thee without this inspiration sent by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.” (Quran 21:25)
The قُرْآن says… “We send the messengers only to give good news and to warn: so those who believe and mend (their lives), upon them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Quran 6:48)
Guidance and Wisdom in Scriptures:
God’s scriptures provide comprehensive guidance on various aspects of life, including personal conduct, social justice, and worship. They offer wisdom that helps individuals navigate the complexities of life while maintaining their faith and integrity. Key teachings from these holy books include the importance of charity, honesty, patience, and humility. By adhering to these principles, believers can achieve both spiritual and worldly success.
The قُرْآن says… “And We have sent down to thee the Book explaining all things, a Guide, a Mercy, and Glad Tidings to Muslims.” (Quran 16:89)
The قُرْآن says… “He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted receives indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.” (Quran 2:269)
Interconnectedness and Continuity:
There is a profound interconnectedness and continuity between the different scriptures. Each subsequent revelation builds upon and reaffirms the messages of the previous ones, creating a cohesive and unified understanding of God’s will. This continuity underscores the consistency of Divine guidance and the timeless relevance of God’s messages.
The قُرْآن says… “This Qur’an is not such as can be produced by other than Allah; on the contrary, it is a confirmation of (revelations) that went before it, and a fuller explanation of the Book – wherein there is no doubt – from the Lord of the worlds.” (Quran 10:37)
Respecting All Divine Scriptures:
Since God loves all humans equally, He has sent His prophets to all nations, imparting His guidance in various languages and cultures. Therefore, there may be many more Divinely revealed scriptures that we are not aware of. Muslims are encouraged to respect every scripture that preaches the right values, regardless of its origin. This respect extends to all Divinely inspired texts that promote justice, compassion, and moral integrity.
The قُرْآن says… “Say: ‘We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam).” (Quran 2:136)
The قُرْآن says… “And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelations), the Books of Abraham and Moses.” (Quran 87:18-19)
Conclusion:
God’s scriptures are invaluable treasures that provide guidance, wisdom, and insight into the Divine will. They highlight the universal values that God wants humanity to uphold and offer solutions to the moral and spiritual challenges we face. By respecting and adhering to these Divine revelations, believers can lead fulfilling lives that align with God’s purpose for humanity. Understanding and appreciating God’s scriptures is essential for fostering a harmonious and just society, grounded in the timeless principles of Divine wisdom.
